I remember how much I have been captivated by the record with Frederic Chopin’s works in Motion Trio’s rendition. Chopin’s version for three accordions sounded surprisingly fresh, at first shocking only to delight all senses later on. And though earlier I thought one can not be surprised by Chopin still the second such item will not easily be found. Janusz Wojtarowicz, Paweł Baranek and Marcin Gałażyn are simply amazingly versatile, artful yet spontaneous artists. I was wondering then how much stereotypical are our expectations about rendering of Chopin’s works and our grasping of accordion - this instrument so complicated and full of limitless potential. The newest album by MT again says” no” to stereotype, only his time in a somehow puckish way. When the musicians announced, that the next recording will contain Russian music, the group’s fans expected the obvious results. However also this time Motion Trio proved it may not be tagged. The latest, eighth record of accordionists, comprising pieces of Russian composers covered by the group’s leader Janusz Wojtarowicz makes another example of a great sense of intangible musical matter. I somehow get the impression that Motion Trio may play just about everything and each time it will be rendered so uniquely that the repertoire seems the a side issue. Arrangements are very thoroughly premeditated so as not to stun with spare fanciful additions. The artists have a great respect for an original. At the same time, however, the ”new clothes” that MT clad it in so wonderfully adds to the character, using all spectrums of possibilities available for accordion. On the record we get: ”Picture at an Exhibition” by Modest Mussorgsky, a piece which has already had so many versions (on of my favorite being that recorded in the 80-ties by Kazuhito Yamashita for classical guitar), that attempting yet another one seems like a true challenge. As usual, MT met this challenge perfectly. Next are the three well known pieces by Prokofiev, brilliantly performed “Andante” from Piano Concerto No.2 in F-major by Dmitri Shostakovich, and the renowned “Dance with swords” by Aram Khachaturian. Musicians from Motion Trio once said, they hold to a rule: music will do just fine without MT, but where we would be without music...?”. I personally can not picture music without those three “cyjas”, radiators, organ on suspenders – you name it.
